"I highly doubt this is going to be working, sunflower." Ivan stated, looking down at the feeble evidence you had managed to put together in a manila folder in his favor. You stuck your tongue out at him bitterly and pulled the file out from under his hands.

"Great positivity, Ivan dear." you muttered. "Anyway it's all we have at the moment and your trial is tomorrow morning. If there is anything else you can tell me that you're willing to have documented there really isn't much I can do until Natalya comes back." You reached out and squeezed his hand affectionately. "What could possibly go wrong?"
"They could rule me guilty of all charges and even speed up my sentence, they could find out you're not a legal lawyer-"

"I am a legal lawyer, actually." You corrected. "I took an online course and have my certificate and everything. Wanna see it?" you pursed your lips at Ivan who crinkled his eyes almost like he were smiling, but his lips were pressed firmly into a line.
"____." he said wearily, "You are not who you say you are and though I don't doubt the quality of the items you had made by those italians you told me about, I don't want you getting into any trouble. This is my problem, not yours."

You glared at him. "You're right, Ivan." you said in Russian, which at this point had become almost natural. "This isn't my problem. What is my problem, and will continue to be my problem for a very long time, is you being executed in Russia while I get thrown back New York trying to live out my life like I never met you. My problem will be trying to convince myself that I'll be all right when you're gone. I can't do that which means you cannot lose this trial are we clear?" your voice had gone very low and the grip on the file in your hands got very tight. Ivan opened his mouth, shut it, looked down at his hands, and then back to you.

"Yes, Ma'am." he said simply. Ivan leaned over the table between you two and kissed the top of your forehead. You dropped the folder and held his cheeks in your hands, turning his chin downward to meet your lips.

"Good." You said, a small smile pulling at the corners of your lips. "I have to go, I'll be back to see you tomorrow." You reached out and brushed a bit of his shaggy beige hair out of his weary violet eyes, "you need a haircut, mister."

"When we go home, I'll get it cut however you want." He assured you with a smile, one of his few genuine smiles, where his teeth showed between his lips and his eyes crinkled up. You sprang up from your chair and planted a firm kiss on his mouth before straightening up and fixing the black blazer covering up a flowery blouse.

"Don't promise me that. You're getting a mullet."

You laughed at the grimace replacing Ivan's smile. "Only joking, see you tomorrow."

"See you tomorrow," he confirmed. You gave him one last smile before opening the heavy door and stepping out of the room and into the brighter department hall. Your heels clicked as you made your way around the building you had come to know like the back of your hand. You waved at Igor on your way out and headed over to Natalya's vacant black Lexus. She had left her usual one here for you and took another out to go 'collect more evidence'.

Whatever evidence, she didn't tell you what it was. Actually, she didn't even tell you where she was going. Figures.

The warm air outside was a pleasant change from the powerful air conditioning inside. Your body shivered in delight at the sudden change and your mouth curled up in a smile. You inhaled deeply and the sweet smell of blooming flowers filled your lungs. It didn't cease to amaze you how different Russia was from your very cold expectation.

The Lexux purred to life when you ignited the engine. A smirk played on your lips when you pulled out of the driveway. Growing up, you hardly ever saw cars as nice as this, let alone actually got to drive one. Given the situation, you were looking for anything to keep your mood in the positive. However, once you started to drive it was hard to keep yourself distracted from the issue.

Your hands subconsiously gripped the steering wheel tighter as thoughts about the trial danced invasively through your head. The odds of this trial ending well, whether you liked it or not, were very slim- especially so if Natalya didn't get back in time. You were counting on her to keep Ivan motivated to tell the truth instead of try to protect Yekaterina, who was absolutely nowhere to be found.

The thoughts raced through your head almost too fast for you to keep up. What if Ivan was found guilty? What if Natalya didn't get back in time? What if they found out you weren't actually who you said you were? Would they try to sentence Natalya, too?

You started to find it harder to breathe. You swerved the car over to the shoulder of the road to keep yourself from flooring the gas. This awful urge to get out of the car and just run had settled itself in your chest, but no matter how much you wanted to, you couldn't will your trembling hands to unlock the car door.

"Breathe, ____." You told yourself shakily. "Everything is g-going to be okay. Just breathe." You rested your head against the sterring wheel and rolled down the window, letting the warm outside air replace the cold A/C in the car. After a few minutes, you slowly pulled yourself together and got back into the road, continuing the journey back to the house. You only had about a ten minute drive to go before you'd make it back into Natalya's neighborhood.

You barely saw the Semi truck barrelling past the redlight when it hit the back side of your car.

The glass shattered in the back windows and your car started to spin out of control and off the road. The surprise of the sudden impact kept your breath hitched in the back of your throat, msking you unable to scream. The fear that pierced through your body rendered you unable to cover yourself. Suddenly there was an earsplitting crash and your head collided with the steering wheel before everything turned black.

~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~

"Ivan Braginski."
Ivan's head snapped up at the unexpected call of his name. One of the officers at the prison he was currently being held at had flicked on the light in his cell. He scrunched his eyes and reached up with a calloused hand to rub his face groggily. He sat himself up, pushing the thin blanket away from himself and turned to face the rather scrawny man before him. He had very light blonde hair that looked almost white in the tight buzz cut he had. A long slim nose divided dark brown eyes and didn't quite separate a strikingly dark unibrow.

"Yes? Why am I being woken up at such an hour?" he asked carefully. He knew that any hint of an attitude towards an officer could mean trouble for Ivan, and he wanted to make sure he was on his best behavior before his trial tomorrow. Which, was technically this morning, but accouring to Ivan it wasn't morning until he had breakfast.

The guard walked into his cell which he shared with one other man, a large fellow who shared similarities with both a gorilla and Danny DeVito, who was snoring through the conversation.

"You have to meet with your counsoler right away." the monobrowed guard said. "It's an issue with your trial."

Ivan nodded silently, biting back a string of curse words that tingled on his tongue. 'Of course this would happen.' he thought to himself bitterly. 'I wonder what they came up with to delay my court date this time.'

He followed the guard down several hallways and down a dimly lit flight of stairs before being ushered into the very right counsolers office. He blinked in annoyance at the sudden flood of florescent light into his eyes, but said nothing and sat quietly into the chair provided for him. The counsoler sitting across from him was a sturdy looking man with neatly groomed salt and pepper hair and kind hazel eyes. He gave Ivan a curt nod, which Ivan returned.

"What was it you needed to see me for, Mr. Dernov?" asked Ivan curtly. He folded his hands together in his lap and tilted his head patiently to the side as Mr. Dernov took a moment to collect his thoughts. He was a very busy man and Ivan knew he sometimes needed a few minutes to unscramble his words.

"Mr. Braginsky," he started, "I am aware of the short notice, but given the situation, we did what we could to help you."

"Excuse me?" Ivan prompted.

"Your lawyer, Miss. ____ is currently unavailable to appear at your court session. We have found a replacement for you, if you would still like to go through with the case, and can push it back three days."

The hairs on the back of Ivan's neck stood on end at the mention of your false Russian identification. Though his face remained blank of all emotion, his heart had begun to pound in his chest. If they had found out who you really were and you got into any trouble, Ivan wouldn't be able to live with himself.

"May I know why she will be absent?" asked Ivan in a very soft voice.

"There was an accident. Her car was hit by a semi-truck and she is currently being held in the hospital in critical condition."

Ivan felt like he had just been punched in the stomach. His blood ran cold as he took in the situation as well as he could without colapsing to the ground. He gripped his hands together tightly to keep them from trembling.

"She was in a car accident," he breathed. "Do you know if she will be okay?"

"She is in the Intensive Care Unit and has been unconsious for twenty-four hours. The doctors are unsure if she will even wake up." Mr. Dernov said. He looked at Ivan carefully and reached out a comforting hand. "You seem to be very concerned for this woman, Ivan."

"Yes-" Ivan said, clipping the word short to keep his voice from breaking. "I have.. I have grown fond of her." he squeezed his eyes shut and clenched his jaw, willing the overwhelming emotions to keep themselves at bay for just a little longer. "May I go see her?" he asked fiercely through gritted teeth.

"That depends on how the trial goes. If all goes well and you are released of course you may see her." Mr. Dernov collected the papers spread out on his desk into one pile and straightened them out. "Obviously, if the trial does not go well, you will not be permitted to leave this facility."

"Yes, okay." Ivan whispered. He stood up and pushed in his chair, using the last of his strength to keep himself together. "If that is all, I would like to go back to bed now."
The counsiler gave an approving nod and Ivan ;ef the room to walked blindly back to his cell. He didn't remember the way there, and he didnt remember climbing up onto his bed or turning off the light. All he remembered was the heart shattering pain and the muffled sobbing of your name. They would only let him see you if he got through the trial, but you might not even last three days!

He moaned at the realization that even if he was found innocent, you may not even be alive by the time he got to your hospital. This could not be happening, it just couldn't. At the start of this, Ivan had some comfort knowing that you were alive, you were safe, and you weren't caught up in his twisted problems. That kept him going. But now? Now you could be gone- any moment could be your last, and it was because of him.

"I will get out of here, ____." He whispered, holding the small pillow to his chest and allowing the forced back tears to flow down his cheeks. "I will come for you. Please, ____, my sunflower, you can't die. You can't." he murmured your name softly to himself, both hands clenched tightly to the pillow that he so badly wished to be you.
Ivan wasn't sure when he actually fell asleep.
